You are the key differentiator for your business—but are you telling your story in a way that converts your audience into clients?
That question was the motivation behind my interview with Danny Brassell, PhD, on my show, the Content Creators Unite! podcast. Also known as “Jim Carrey with a PhD,” Danny is a communication expert who helps entrepreneurs boost their impact through storytelling.
The Power of Personal Storytelling
When it comes to authentic connections with your audience, it’s hard to beat a good story. But Danny notes that you don’t have to just talk about your wins. “Talk about all your failures,” he told me, “because not everybody in your audience has succeeded—but they’ve all failed. And the more you talk about your own failures, [the more] you’re going to connect with your audience.”
This advice comes with a caveat, however. Even when you relate your failures, you need to tell them in a way that leads to hope and leaves the audience feeling good about themselves. Danny shared the example of his friend Richard, a financial advisor, who connects with his audience by sharing his early mistakes and what he learned from them.
The Five C’s Framework
Dr. Brassell also emphasized that telling your story well is a skill that can be learned. “Speaking is a skill just like podcasting is a skill,” said Danny. “Anything that you do in life, you have to do the reps.”
He teaches this skill to his clients using the Five C’s framework he developed:
- Clarity
- Connect
- Content
- Call to Action
- Close
As part of this framework, he coaches clients to become better storytellers by helping them answer two questions: “Who is your audience?” and “What’s the problem that you solve?”
Personal stories crafted with these questions in mind are much more likely to lead to authentic connections and conversions.
Practical Communication Strategies
We also discussed a common roadblock among business owners—having trouble coming up with stories to tell.
Danny presented an easy—and fun—solution. He suggested taking an hour or two to write down every personal story you can think of as well as its underlying theme. This list can then be used as a reference any time you need a good story.
