“If your blog isn’t SEO optimized, you’re wasting your time.” -random SEO expert (probably)

I’ve heard this message a ton over the years, as I’m sure you have too.

No offense to random SEO articles, but I disagree.

Blogs Aren’t Just About SEO Anymore

Now, all things being equal, is an SEO-optimized blog better than one that’s not? Absolutely.

And should you take steps to improve your SEO? Yes, you totally should!

Your blog is far more valuable to your business than just as a tool to bring in organic traffic.

But one thing I’ve learned as a writer and editor is that your blog is far more valuable to your business than just as a tool to bring in organic traffic.

The fact is, you can do a lot of things with just one blog post. And since getting your product or service in front of as many people as possible is the name of the game, repurposing your blog makes a ton of sense.

Okay, Jon. That all sounds well and good, but how do you do it? What does repurposing your latest blog post actually look like?

I’m glad you asked!

Here are five ways you can reuse your blog content to reach more potential customers.

YouTube Videos

Although I don’t believe written content is going away any time soon (or ever), video content is definitely taking off.

So don’t get suckered into either/or thinking.

If you have a blog, you essentially have a repository of video scripts just waiting to be uncovered.

What I mean is this: you can have a blog anda YouTube channel.

(Seriously, try it. No one will stop you, I promise!)

If you have a blog, you essentially have a repository of video scripts just waiting to be uncovered. You can do something as quick and dirty as recording yourself explaining blog posts, or you could go all out and massage your posts into full-on video scripts—or anything in between.

Even better, you can take bits and pieces of posts and turn them into Shorts (or Reels if Instagram is your jam).

Podcast Topics

Like videos, podcasts are absolutely exploding in popularity right now.

(Even I have one. Check it out to learn content marketing tips and tricks straight from the experts!)

And, like videos, your next podcast script is staring you in the face. Yup, you guessed it—it’s your latest blog post!

You can use any blog post as a jumping-off point to record a solo episode, or you can find guests who can provide additional commentary, experience, or details.

Starting a podcast is actually quite easy and low cost (all you really need is a halfway decent mic), and they are a great way to get your name out there and grow your network.

You can use any blog post as a jumping-off point to record a solo episode, or you can find guests who can provide additional commentary, experience, or details.

And if you don’t want to start your own podcast, you can always be a guest on other podcasts, which is even easier. In that case, you can utilize your blog to put together a guest bio and interview cheat sheet to facilitate the process.

Social Media Posts

1 blog post = ∞ social media posts.

This is by far the easiest method of repurposing posts.

All you need to do is pull out bite-sized bits of value from your blog, edit them lightly, and voila! you now have as many custom-made social posts as you want to create.

If you have a subscription to a tool like Canva, you can even add graphics to go along with them. (Or just do what I did and marry an amazing graphic designer.)

Newsletters

If you have (or want to grow) an audience, newsletters are a great tool to do it, and your existing blog has within it the seeds of your next edition right now.

Depending on your current blog’s length and style, creating a newsletter using a blog post as a starting point could be as simple as copying and pasting.

Your existing blog has within it the seeds of your next newsletter right now.

Or, it could require some editing to fit the context—especially if your posts tend to run long.

Regardless, the process to convert a blog post into a newsletter isn’t rocket science. It’s mainly just about ensuring readability in a new format.

E-Books

Let’s say you have five, ten, or even fifteen blog posts that either a) get a lot of views or b) are part of a series of related posts.

A great way to repurpose these posts is to bundle them together as an e-book for top-of-funnel lead generation.

Create a pop-up form to give away your e-book in exchange for an email address, and you’ve just automated a portion of your lead generation.

All you need to do is add a simple cover (use Canva) and a short introduction and conclusion, and your e-book is now ready to publish.

After that, create a mechanism (such as a website pop-up form) to give away your e-book in exchange for an email address, and you’ve just automated a portion of your lead generation.

(I love how fancy it sounds when you say it that way.)

What’s Your Next Step?

There are innumerable other ways to repurpose your blog content, but these five ideas should be more than enough to get you started.

So now there's only one question left to answer: which of these can you put into practice today?
